Make Ethereum Cypherpunk Again

Vitalik Buterin's essay is a much-needed wake-up call for an ecosystem that has largely lost its way in a sea of speculative token trading and high-frequency arbitrage. As an engineer who was initially drawn to public blockchains for their potential to build censorship-resistant infrastructure, I’ve watched with growing dismay as Ethereum has increasingly drifted toward centralized node relays, compliance gates, and user-hostile gas fees. Vitalik's call to return to cypherpunk roots is a reminder of why we started building on this stack in the first place.

As a startup founder, I appreciate that this isn't just an idealistic plea; it’s a technical roadmap. Realizing this vision requires us to integrate advanced cryptographic tools like zero-knowledge proofs and secure MPC directly into user-facing applications. We need to make privacy and decentralized identity the default developer primitives rather than luxury features. If we can build consumer apps where users actually own their data and communicate privately without sacrificing UX, we can build a Web3 that actually deserves its name.

What stuck with me

• Resisting financialization creep: Ethereum must actively balance its massive financial use cases with non-financial decentralized technologies like peer-to-peer messaging, voting, and identity.
• Privacy as a primitive: Developing and scaling zero-knowledge proofs is essential to giving everyday users real, usable on-chain privacy without sacrificing regulatory compliance.
• The developer responsibility: Building truly decentralized applications requires engineers to avoid centralizing shortcuts like relying on single web APIs or hosted database backends.
