As an engineer trying to build tools that push the limits of human productivity, reading Gwern's analysis of cognitive enhancement was a sobering experience. The "Algernon argument"—that if an easy cognitive enhancement existed without severe trade-offs, evolution would have already selected for it—makes perfect biological sense. It forces us to confront why we aren't smarter: our brains are already balanced on a knife-edge of metabolic costs, heat dissipation, and neural stability. Any attempt to artificially dial up one aspect of human intelligence almost certainly incurs a hidden tax elsewhere, whether in emotional volatility, sleep requirements, or developmental vulnerabilities.
But what really kept me up tonight is how this biological wall contrasts with our work in artificial intelligence. Silicon does not share our evolutionary baggage. A machine doesn't have to fit through a birth canal, nor does it have to survive a famine or maintain a delicate homoeostatic equilibrium developed over millions of years of foraging. By bypassing these organic trade-offs, AI represents a completely different paradigm of cognitive growth, free from the biological checks and balances that bind us. It makes me realize that our job as founders isn't to build tools that make humans behave like computers, but to understand how to build systems where these two entirely different types of intelligence can complement each other's fundamentally different constraints.
